Scarsdale

With the commute to Manhattan only 29 minutes by express train, this family-friendly town is an ideal bedroom community. Homes inScarsdale are mostly single-family, and, though most were built during the 20th century, houses tend to have character rather than being cookie-cutter clones. Tudor-style and colonial estates in the neighborhoods of Heathcote and FoxMeadow range from large to enormous, while those in Greenacres and Edgewood are generally on smaller lots and more affordable by Scarsdale standards. The amenities of Christie Place, a recently-built condominium complex and adult community, appeal to over-55s.

Scarsdale schools weigh in with consistently high SAT  scores, with averages often coming in over 100 points higher than national averages. With over 20 parks and playgrounds, 26 public tennis courts, an open-air complex with four pools and an extensive program of sports for allages, life in Scarsdale retains a focus on families and children.

If your idea of heaven is to be surrounded by golf courses, Scarsdale fits the bill, with an 18-hole golf course on either side. The downtown village center with its quaint brick and Tudor architecture is awalkable, neighborly business hub offering bakeries, cafes, shops and restaurants as well as the Metro-North train station.

The morning rush hour commute to Grand Central Terminal fromthe Scarsdale station on Metro-North's Harlem line takes less than 40 minutes (29 minutes on an express train).

With New York City and Long Island Sound to the south, Putnam County on the north and Connecticut to the east, Westchester County holds the distinction of being the world's first large-scale suburb. Major interstate highways constructed during the 1950s and 1960s and the construction of the Tappan Zee Bridge encouraged major corporations to build their headquarters here. A sweet spot for commuters traveling by car or by the Metro-North Commuter Railroad, today's Westchester is one of the nation's most affluent counties and the location of many of New York City's most desirable suburban communities.
